Whether you are looking for a gentle afternoon walk or a challenging high-mountain adventure, these are a few of our favourite hikes in and around Verbier.
Pierre Avoi hike at sunset
Croix de Coeur - Pierre Avoi
Best for: Sunset views
One of the most rewarding short hikes in the area, this route begins at Croix de Coeur and climbs steadily towards the peak of Pierre Avoi. The trail itself is relatively straightforward, but the final section requires some scrambling and a head for heights.
Your reward is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the region. As the sun begins to set behind the surrounding peaks, the Rhone Valley and Verbier itself are bathed in golden light. The real definition of ‘heavenly’.
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 3.1 km
Elevation gain: 280 m
Worth noting: Some climbing is required near the summit. If hiking for sunset, remember to bring a head torch for the descent.
La Chaux - Verbier (via the Bisse du Levron)
Best for: A relaxed summer afternoon
For those seeking a gentler route, this downhill hike follows the historic Bisse du Levron irrigation channel from La Chaux back towards Verbier. The trail winds through forests and alpine pastures, with the sound of flowing water to accompany you.
This is a wonderful option for families or anyone looking to spend a leisurely afternoon in the mountains without tackling significant elevation gain. Along the way, you will enjoy open views across the valley and plenty of opportunities to stop for a picnic.
Difficulty: Easy - Moderate
Elevation gain: Mostly downhill
Peak Elevation: 2,265 m
Distance: 13.4 km
Worth noting: Visit in late summer and you will find the banks of the trail peppered with juicy wild blueberries. A small bag is worth bringing for foraging along the way!
Fontanet - Lac des Vaux - Savoleyres
Best for: Wild swimming
If there is one hike that epitomises a Verbier summer, it is this one. Starting from Fontanet, the trail climbs towards the striking turquoise waters of Lac des Vaux before continuing to Savoleyres.
On warm summer days, the lake becomes a popular spot for a refreshing alpine swim. Surrounded by rugged peaks, it is hard to imagine a better place to cool off after a hike. Afterwards, as you head towards Savoleyres, a spectacular view emerges, down to the town and valley beyond.
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 9.2 km
Elevation gain: 455 m
Worth noting: Bring your swimsuit, SPF, snacks and a towel. Thank us later.
Les Ruinettes - Col des Gentianes
Best for: High alpine scenery
For experienced hikers looking to venture further into the mountains, this challenging route delivers some of the most dramatic landscapes in the region.
Beginning at Les Ruinettes, the trail climbs steadily towards Col des Gentianes, passing beneath towering peaks and offering far-reaching views across the surrounding Alps. The terrain feels distinctly more alpine, with rocky trails and a true sense of being deep in the mountains.
From panoramic ridgelines to sweeping views of the Grand Combin massif, this is one of Verbier's most rewarding local hikes.
Difficulty: Hard
Distance: 7.7 km
Elevation gain: 717 m
Worth noting: Stop for lunch at Cabane Mont Fort along the way. At 2,457 metres, this iconic mountain hut offers front-row views of peaks such as Bec des Rosses (home of the Freeride World Tour final each winter!) and is the perfect place to refuel with tasty local fare before continuing towards the pass.
