Verbier’s ski season begins gradually from November, with lifts opening progressively as snow conditions allow. While early-season skiing will always be dictated by the weather, recent winters have shown just how rewarding December skiing can be. Last season, an early and generous snowfall saw the resort operating at full capacity by the 29th of November.
There is no strategy required to beat the queues, no need to race for first lifts. Instead, move at your leisure and enjoy uninterrupted laps on familiar pistes, which feel fresh and promising without their usual mid-season traffic.
This really is Verbier skiing stripped back to its essentials: good snow, breathtaking mountains and very little standing between you and your next descent.

“Most people, early in the season, stay in the main bowl. Head down to Le Chable and take the gondola across to Bruson instead. It’s heavily treelined and lower in elevation, so visibility stays clear even when the upper mountain is a white-out – and its north-facing tree runs hold cold, untracked powder for days after the main slopes are skied out.”
Verbier before the rush
The appeal extends well beyond the skiing.
There is a sense of excitement throughout the village in early December. With rejuvenated teams at the helm, restaurants and bars begin reopening for winter, fireplaces are roaring again and locals are settling into the rituals of another season.

“Late November is when the first batches of winter Raclette du Valais AOP are fully aged and brought out at the Laiterie de Verbier. This makes early season the perfect moment for one of Marc’s cheese-making workshops – few guests think to ask, but our driving service can take you there and back!”
Spontaneous lunches melt into serene spa afternoons, and if you walk home through the village, you’ll find the air is quiet enough to hear snow crunching underfoot.

The art of doing very little
Early December lends itself particularly well to the other side of a ski holiday: the hours when you are decidedly not skiing.
